Leadership
There are leaders the people fear
There are leaders the people hate
There are leaders the people love
But when the best leaders of all
Have finished their work
The people say, "We did it ourselves!"
Lao Tzu, Chinese Philosopher
How Leaders Influence Followers
Reward Power-Power to reward: raises, good schedules, best work assignments
Coercive Power -Power to punish:
firing, not assign good projects, criticism
Legitimate Power- "The Boss"
Power because of organizational hierarchy
Expert Power- Expert on a given subject
Referent Power- Personality power
Leadership Styles
Authoritarian Leader -Holds control over group; makes decisions for group members. Good style when decisions must be made quickly--Army, EMT. In regular groups, group members resent authoritarian leaders and don’t cooperate
Laissez-Faire Leader-Does little actual leading. Good for support groups. Most groups need structure and can fall apart without some leadership.
Democratic Leader- Allows all points of view be heard.; keeps discussion on track; lets all members be heard; never tells the group what to do; offers ideas and lets the group react; may suggest directions to take; leader may change. Works best when members are of equal status.
A determined person is one who, when they get to the end of their rope,
ties a knot and hangs on.
Joe Griffith
Shoot for the moon.
Even if you miss it,
you will land among the stars.
It is never too late to be
what you might have been. George Elliot
People migh not get all they work for in this world,
but they must certainly work for all they get.
Fredrick Douglas
One of the secrets of success
is to refuse to let temporary setbacks defeat us.
